“I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he said, ‘it is more blessed to give than to receive.’ “-Apostle Paul. Acts 20:35 NKJV.
Most times when I have a conversation with people about the blessings of giving, they generally assume that the next thing I am going to ask for is money. You can loosen the grip on your wallet or purse, I am not going to ask you for any money. Also, you don’t have to try to come up with an Oscar-worthy performance of why you can’t or won’t give any money. Now that I have cleared that up, exhale, relax and allow me to proceed.
As a young immature believer in Jesus Christ, I also used to think giving was only about money. However, as a mature disciple of Jesus Christ, I understand that there are a lot of things you can give that will not cost you a dime. A kind word does not cost you anything but to the life it is spoken into, it could be worth more than Silver or Gold. A smile is another thing you can give that cost you nothing. Old clothes that you cannot fit any more could be the perfect fit for someone less fortunate and that also is at no direct cost to you.
Words that edify, have the power to resurrect a broken heart. A couple of years ago, I was in my local grocery store picking up a few items, I noticed a middle-aged lady pushing her cart, but her countenance was low. The Holy Spirit came over me and I walked up to her and said, “God loves you, and there is nothing you’ve done that can ever stop him from loving you. You are still his daughter and he is always with you.” She raised her head up to look at me and immediately burst into tears. I wasn’t sure at that point whether to leave or stay but the power of God prevented me from moving. She looked at me with tear-filled eyes and said, “you have no idea how much that means to me.” She then proceeded to tell me how her family and close friends had abandoned her due to some personal choices she made and how lonely she felt. She then expressed to me that she even thought God was through with her because of those choices. She started to cry again and asked if she could hug me and I obliged. As we parted ways, I told her God had visited her today, you could visibly see the change in her countenance, and I gave God glory.
To those who of you who were clutching to your wallets and purses earlier, no I still don’t want your money, but I must openly rebuke you. Most of you would give anything if it isn’t money, that’s sad. You are like the rich young ruler who came to Jesus to ask what he must do to have eternal life but went away sorrowful because Jesus told him to sell all that he had and give it to the poor, Luke 18: 18-25, NKJV. The truth is that anything you value that much and put before God controls you, and whether you want to believe it or not, you have made it your god. God said in Exodus 20:3, NKJV not to have any other gods before him. No matter how rich you are, if you cannot use your wealth and riches to help the less fortunate, you are poor in spirit. And please, don’t tell me you donate to some charity in Africa or Haiti. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but take a walk down the street, I guarantee you will walk past two or three people you could help right now. When you have helped everyone around you, then you can donate to charities in Africa and Haiti. An elderly brother in Christ once said this to me. “you haven’t lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.”
Make it a daily habit to give something to someone different. It could be your co-workers, family or random strangers, especially random strangers. This is where true blessings come from, and it does not go unnoticed by God. Put others before you, help the weak and don’t hold on too tight to any material thing, it may very well be for someone else. Do these things and God’s hand will continually be upon you and remember you have nothing to lose but blessings to gain. These are Julien’s thoughts and what’s on his mind.
