Then Peter came to him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times? 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” Matthew 18: 21 & 22. NKJV.
A gentleman once told me that he does not forgive anyone who offends him. I asked why and he simply said, “because that’s how I am.” He looked pleased with himself saying that and I paused for a moment and asked, “have you ever offended anyone in your life?” He responded and said, “of course I have, but I don’t care.” I was taken aback by his response, but it got me thinking about people that feel this way. Below are some of the things I shared with him before I prayed for God to touch his heart.
In our society today forgiveness is looked upon as a form of weakness because it seems much easier to repay evil for evil. I am here to tell you that this is a lie from the pit of hell. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are never to repay evil for evil, even Jesus tells us this in Luke 6:27 and 28, NKJV. There is way more strength in forgiving someone than to pay them back with the same coin. Jesus also demonstrated the strength in forgiveness on the cross in Luke 23:34, NKJV after he was spat on, whipped, bruised, kicked, slapped, mocked and then nailed to the cross. Jesus could have easily called on a host of angels to come and destroy the men who beat and tortured him but instead he chose to forgive them, now that is strength like I have never seen.
I know it’s not always easy to forgive when people offend us, especially when they hurt us emotionally or physically. Sometimes it takes a little longer to forgive certain things and I understand that, but like everything else, practice makes perfect. The more you practice forgiveness the easier it becomes to forgive. Through the years, I have been striving to forgive quickly if someone offends me, even if they never ask for forgiveness. The truth is that forgiveness is not for the person who offends you, it’s for you because it destroys you from the inside through bitterness and it will affect your health. If none of the above are enough reasons to forgive, think on this, if you don’t forgive people who trespass against you neither will God our father and creator forgive you for your trespasses against him. If you don’t think you trespass against God that much, take a tally of how many times in a single day you sin against God, then you will understand why His grace is a wonderful thing.
