Thought For The Day- Why Are You Asking

You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. James 4:3, NKJV.

Have you ever prayed for material things such as money, cars, houses or even success in business and felt like God didn’t or hasn’t answered your prayers. I know that I have asked for all of the above and felt like God did not hear my prayers, or chose not to answer them but I found out that this was not the case. There are times when we have to be brutally honest with ourselves especially, before we approach God to ask for anything. The reason for this is because God knows our heart, he doesn’t just hear your words but he searches your heart when you ask him for things in prayer. However, do not let this discourage you from asking anything you desire from God, because Jesus himself encourages us to ask God for anything and tells us that we shall receive it, Matt 7:7 NKJV. I know this sounds  contradictory from my above statement but the passage above from the book of James sheds a lot of light on why I didn’t get answers to my prayers.

When I prayed for the material things above, I realized that I  really wanted those things for my own selfish pleasures and most especially for pride. God hates pride, Proverbs 6: 16 & 17, NKJV. I did not ask for those things so that I could use it to help others and to demonstrate God’s love to those who do not know him. I realized I had some growing to do in God through Jesus Christ, the lesson I took away from this was, God blesses us to be a blessing to others around us.

Google defines amiss as; not quite right; inappropriate or out of place and the passage above says this is the reason why we do not receive what we ask for. There is nothing wrong with asking God for material things (although, he would rather you ask him for spiritual gifts) as long as they are not for selfish reasons. So re-think why you wants these things, be honest, think about people that can benefit from you having it, be willing to share and give and then ask God again. Even in your current situation, what do you have that can be a blessing to someone else remember, it does not always have to be money. Be a blessing to someone today and watch God bless you back. These are Julien’s thoughts and what’s on his mind.
